hello gentlemen,
i started learning clarinet a couple of months ago on an 1930's 3-piece silver metal pan american brilliante clarinet with barrel. the mouthpiece is a cheap no-brand plastic, which is causing me a bit of trouble.
i noticed yesterday that second-hand clarinet mouthpieces on ebay are rather affordable, so i thought i'd better upgrade to a better mouthpiece.
i would prefer a metal mouthpiece, as i really like the sound of metal instruments. or perhaps ebonite would sound fine with this metal clarinet too.
i' d also like to avoid new mouthpieces (as it is a vintage instrument).
could you recommend some quality old brands and models of mouthpieces, that would suit such an instrument. secondhand mouthpieces are not available where i live, so ebay will (have to) be my choice - i will not be able to test the mouthpiece, and will have to rely on brand reputation.
i would prefer to avoid student grade material, as the best clarinet stuff is rather "affordably" priced anyway (when compared to other instruments), and with a little bit of patience, i can probably get good stuff fairly cheap on ebay.

You didnt state whether you are using an open or closed mpc.
But...there were several makers of metal horns.
Since you seem to like authenticity, might I suggest Bettoney (the better ones are pricey...if you must have one, contact me)
or similar brand (search this site for metal clarinet makers) The best I ever saw was by Haynes.
As far as metal mouthpiece go, Gary Sugal the sax maker has clarinet metal mpc. (note, that is Sugal, NOT Segal) and occasionally a metal faced Silva-Lae appears on ebay.

theres no reason you need a vintage mouthpiece since the horn's old. my old metal horn plays fine on a modern mouthpiece. i'd also reconsider the choice of instrument - very few folks play those old metal horns anymore.
get a new , student friendly mouthpiece until you're more experienced. buy one off of ebay you could get a good one, could get one with chips, scratches, etc. risky.
try a FOBES DEBUT. get a new one, $27.95 from wwbw.com.
great sound, and easy to control for students. excellent quality.
consider getting a new ligature - the one that came with your old horn probably is bent , misshapen, etc.

The Fobes Debut to me has no equal for price vs quality.
It plays as good as many $70 ones!

If you want something slightly more open than the Fobes, I'd recommend the Hite Premier, which like. The only caveat is that it might be a tad loose in your barrel.

A bigger caveat is that the Hite Premiere mouthpieces, at this time, are VERY DIFFICULT to find.
WW/BW is showing a Dec 1 availability date !! ...GBK

I bought a Hite Pemiere quite recently from 1Stop Clarinet and Sax, a couple of weeks ago. They are still showing them as available.
