I have an old Selmer Paris clarinet and have been doing some serial number research to establish the age. I have found that prior to 1926 there are no records available. Has anyone got a location that has any information on these instruments as far as their serial numbers go? I have a AXX10 instrument. It is marked Selmer Paris Brevete.

Hi, I may be able to offer some help. A very, very old friend who was a marvelous player died some years ago at the ripe old age of 95 or so. His daughter gave me his clarinet with the original invoice from The Alexander Selmer Co., New York, dated 1916. It is the low pitch B-flat horn, and came with an adj. barrel and mouthpiece. The cost, including shipping was a whopping $64.94. The serial number is 4824 and it is the Brevette model.
I toyed with the idea of having it restored, but could not justify the expense if I did not intend on using it. The invoice is framed in my picture gallery.
I hope this helps.

Adjusted for inflation that would be about $1190 in today's dollars. Still a good deal!

Gene,
Thanks for your help, does the invoice state the serial number? Mine is a letter A with four digits. Thanks again for your help.

Gene,
Sorry for the confusion, I see you listed the serial number , what I meant to ask, did it have a letter prefix before the digits? I have a lower number than yours so it could be prior to 1916. Thanks again

Hi again,
No problem, Glad to help. To answer your question concerning the serial number - there is no letter prefix. However, let's go to the invoice, which by the way is written in beautiful ink penmanship. The horn is listed as follows:
"1 low pitch B flat Selmer Clarinet # 15, "HS" lay on mp.
1 adj barrel"
Frankly, I am a bit puzzled by the #15, unless that refers to the HS* mouthpiece that is with the horn.
By the way - I was mistaken on the cost of the horn. The $64.94 did not include shipping. It was sent C.O.D. Sorry about that.
Another interesting point. The horn came to my friend with a generous three day trial period! I love it.
