Good piece to play during a Church Service?
Author: Ben

Any suggestions for good music to play in a church service, preferably something that was composed with religious significance, as that would be most desirable for a church to program?

I am planning on playing God Bless the Child (transcription of the Eric Dolphy solo) on bass clarinet this Sunday, but the person hiring me to play was thinking some other classical pieces for other services would be good, too.

Maybe not to open the service but any lacrimae by John Dowland - esp "Flow My Tears". Great on sax or bass clt with organ accompaniment.
Goes down very well as the Offertory or quietly over Communion.

Music selection can generate amazing arguments with the Liturgical Committee (if there is one).

How about "I Believe in Miracles" (was it by Bootsy's Rubber Band? Someone please verify that......)

Sorry, I was all wrong -- the song I had in mind is called "You Sexy Thing" by the band Hot Chocolate and would be entirely inappropriate for a church service. My bad.

Just swap out "Sexy" with "Holy" and you're good to go. I've been to several youth masses at local Catholic churches where the youth choirs don't sound too far removed from the slap-bass solo crowd.

I hear (flipping through the channels) a violinist playing on one of those Sunday morning Bible shows - the piece he was performing was the Sarasate Zeugnerwiesen

I'll bet ya they all loved it and didn't have a clue that it was titled "gypsy songs"

Yeah ... send in the clowns.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Second movement of the Mozart concerto has always been popular in my church.

Second movement of Mendelssohn Sonata is my suggestion.

2nd Movement of the Brahms F minor or the Larghetto from the Mozart Quintet (piano reduction) would both work really well

I've had students play the Baermann (ex Wagner) Adagio to good reviews in church. Bassi Nocturne is also sufficiently solemn to be performed as an offertory. Both also work very well with organ accompaniment.

I've had good results from two Bach pieces: Siciliano (the same one covered by Richard Stoltzman and Eddie Daniels), and Bist Du Bei Mir (Anna Magdalena Notebook). Neither are particularly religious but they serve the purpose. I'm surprised at the Mozart Concerto's Adagio. That's about eight minutes long.

But the discussion of titles is very amusing. Since we're considering things like "God Bless the Child" and "I Believe in Miracles", we might as well consider "Fire & Rain" or even "Get Me to the Church On Time."

I could almost picture the TBN all-stars cranking up Barry Manilow's "It's A Miracle." It makes me think of the Benediction from "200 Motels."
