I went to see him and his quintet last evening with the Houston Symphony. It was a truly amazing performance of Cuban, Brazilian, and music from Mexico in both a classical and jazz idiom. The orchestra opened with El Salon de Mexico. Then Mr. Rivera (clarinet and alto sax) and company performed an extended feature comprised of Gershwin selections...Porgy and Bess, An American in Paris, Rhapsody in Blue, Summertime, etc. which was enjoyable. However the performance after the intermission was spectacular. Mr. Rivera along with his quintet and symphony played several latin selectons, two of which were Mr. Rivera's compositions. The selections were announced from the stage so I can not tell you specifics since I do not speak Spanish and most titles were lost to my anglo ear, but if you get a chance to hear him perform you will surely enjoy the performance. My sixteen year old "rock n roll' die hard son was even on his feet at the end of the performance!

I was going to go to that concert but was unable to find anyone to go with me. I'm glad to hear it went so well.

I've had the opportunity to hear him play live. My experience was very similar to J. Butler's (he is unbelievably talented, and I enjoyed every minute of the concert).
I too recommend him (I have his CD entitled "The Clarinetist - Volume I" and recommend that as well for an interesting jazz/classical crossover style)
