 Mahler Chamber Works?
Author: wjk

Do any chamber works by Mahler exist? I've seen reference to an early piano piece, and I saw a CD that claimed to be a chamber version of a Mahler symphony. Any comments/suggestions?

Aside from the numerous songs for voice and piano, Mahler's chamber music attempts were primarily from his early years.

These included a piano quartet, 2 different piano quintets, sonata for violin and piano, and a string quintet.

He also had a few incomplete works such as a piano duet based on the Scherzo of Symphony #1

There is an excellent 2 volume set of books on Mahler by Donald Mitchell which describes all the above works...GBK

Erwin Stein.

BTW - We should probably also list the Schoenberg chamber arrangement of Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen ...GBK

There is also the amazing Schoenberg transcription of Das Lied von der Erde.

I have a CD of the Mahler/Schoenberg/Riehn chamber version of Das Lied von der Erde. The sleeve notes explain how this arrangement, and others referred to above, were made to be played by the Society for Private Musical Performances (Verein fuer musikalische Privatauffuehrungen) founded by Schoenberg in 1918.

A private musical performance seems a bit of a contradiction in terms to me, but an interesting idea even so.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Songs of a Wayfarer (Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen) is available on Sony Classical arranged for voice and piano with Fischer-Dieskau and Leonard Bernstein on piano. Rückert Lieder is also available on that disc.

In the mid-80s I went to a Sydney SO concert at which was performed "Symphonic Prelude" by Mahler. It was explained that it was arranged (no attribution given) from one of his early pieces, presumably for piano. Even at that age (17) I had a good knowledge of Mahler and it was nothing I knew. I can't remember the orchestration and it's not a chamber work, but may have begun as one.

A Google search reveals this, probably the same piece, but with a different history to what I first heard.

There is also a version of Schubert's Death and the Mainden done for orchestra by Mahler...very interesting stuff.
