I wondered if maybe someone on here who plays sax would be able to help...
About six months ago my grandmother bought an old, well-used alto sax from a flea market/swap show in Monroe, MI. She took all of the mothballs out of the case (yuck) and shipped it up to me. I can't find anyone who knows anything about the company who made it, or if they're still in existence. It also came with an extra part that nobody knows anything about.
My saxophone's bell states "Wolverine, by Grinnell Brothers, Detroit, MI". It is in bad shape. The lacquer is worn off in many places and the entire thing smells badly of mothballs. I've tried letting it sit out, but when my neighbors can smell it from outside our house, I have to put it away. Every pad on the instrument is made of leather, and it appears to be a normal alto except it came with a small brass tube that fits where the neck would go. The neck doesn't fit inside this tube, but the mouthpiece does. Has anyone seen anything like this? The tube is about two inches in length.

The tube is just a protective cap for the neck socket (to keep the octave lever from getting bent) when the horn is stored in the case. Remove the cap before installing the neck.

Back in the dark ages of the 30's -'41, I lived in Lansing, went to Mich State, bought reeds etc at Grinnell's Music, they had stores in a number of the larger cities. Wolverine being a MI name, was a stencil on insts made by others, I'd pick Conn, perhaps Buescher [Elkhart, IN] as the best possibilities. If you can compare the bell embellishments and the "character" of the key structure of 20-30 Conns et al, you might tell. As to smells, the case is prob the worst, put it in bright sunligh [open] for several days, if it still is bad, pitch it. The sax should clean up OK, pads and corks might need replacement and very likely adjustments, so a [good] playing condition overhaul may be as bit expensive [much more than for cl, more complex] . Great for display, playing ?? Don
