A instuctor I had advised me after preparing them to spit on them a lot as it kept them properly seasoned and made them play better,so much for all the pharmiceutical remidies.

Re/ preserving reeds--also, rub back of reed of the back-side of sandpaper until it has a glazed appearance (this is done after making certain the backside is level). Also, after balancing and wetting, rub the front with your thumb of forefinger until it feels smooth. This closes the pores and supposedly makes the reed last longer per session. For more ideas on reed prep, I recommend the book by Ben Armato called PERFECT A REED....AND BEYOND. Lots of interesting ideas based upon his many years of experiance as a professional NY city clarinetist (Met. Opera, I believe).
