Is any one faimilar with this Italian clarinet maker? Does anyone own its clarinets? I've searched the archives and found very little about it.

The website indicates that it makes the entire clarinet familiar, even the piccolo Ab and F basset horn. The alto G clarinet and the contra clarinets, all Boehm system, certainly got my attention.

How does the G clarinet compare to those made by Amati (simple system) and Orsi (Boehm)? (It's strangely coincidental that all three makers are not the "mainstream" manufacturers). I have wanted to purchase a G for a long time, would appreciate any help here.

Also, the contras are certainly unique looking. Someone in an older post even said it was ugly. The large bell is impressive and is a huge chuck of wood (palissander).

Is palissander wood the same as rosewood?

I would be interested to know more if anyone would like to share comments, experiences, etc.

Thank you.

Willy

In http://www.laripamonti.com/profile.html they refer to rosewood.

My understanding is that "rosewood" covers a group of tree species, and palisander (which is the usual spelling, rather than "palissander") is one species from that group.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

How does one find a picture of the contras? I don't see it.

Odd note: I think Woody Allen's first clarinet was a Ripamonti.

The contra is pictured on the ecommerce site:

It really is worth a look, for devotees of BIG instruments!

The site says "L.A. Ripamonti take the name from his founder Mr. LUIGI ANDREA RIPAMONTI who in 1975 decided to start with the specialized production of clarinets, after 30 years of experience on all woodwind instruments."

Not sure whether this means
a) they started making clarinets in 1975, or
b) they have made clarinets since 1945 and gave up making anything else in 1975.

If the former, seems unlikely that they made Woody Allen's first-ever clarinet.
