 Custom Made Barrels

I am looking for a source for a custom made barrel. I have a very old one-piece Buffet that has an unusually long (29/32") upper tenon and so a stock barrel will not fit. I suppose it would be possible to ream out the bottom socket of a "stock" barrel to accomodate this but it seems to me that in doing so it might create too much of a difference between the bore dimensions of the barrel vs. the body of the clarinet. So, I figure if I want a shorter barrel than the one that I already have, I will have to have it custom made, that is unless someone out there has a better idea. Does anyone know of a source for such a thing?

Ralph Morgan, who makes mouthpieces, also makes barrels. He might be willing to custom make one for you, although it probably won't be cheap. He's at 937-322-5041.

There are others who make barrels as well-Jim Pyne in Columbus comes to mind. Check with Sneezy sponsors.

Along with:
Jim Pyne
Clark Fobes
Robert Scott
Greg Smith

and a host of others whose names fail me. Jim, Clark, and Greg are sponsors of Sneezy, too.

Mark Charette, sitting in Jim Pyne's office at the moment :^)

If you want to try making your own, Gilmer Wood Company in Portland OR sells African blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon, I believe) in suitably sized squares and balks. One comment though - this wood is terrifically hard and plugs sandpaper easily.
