I just got my wife a copy of Mercadante's Concerto in Em for Flute (not an easy one to find). I noticed that in addition to the regular slur lines, it has slur lines made up of a series of dashes. She showed me another peice that has this also. I can't find it in my books anywhere. Can anyone tell what it means and how to play it?

It may be an indication that the slurs are editorial markings, and we're present on the original score. Sometimes new publications will do this to allow people to decide if they wish to play it as the signature score was written, or in the editorial version. The editorial version is often based on a contemporary performer's performance, so it gives you an idea how a person of the composer's time would have played the piece. Hope this helps!

I really think it is an editorial insertion. I.e. something the composer did not notate in the piece but that the editor believes should be there or is optional. This is generally based on how the piece has come to be generally performed.
