 4 walls of freedom
Author: John Morton
Date:   2005-01-25 19:21

This relates to the current discussion of melody vs. harmony. There is a concept called "the four walls of freedom" which expresses a wonderful viewpoint. In music the four walls are melody, harmony, rhythm and form. We must all make our music within these borders, and yet they constitute freedom rather than constraint. I find this somehow beautiful and mysterious.

Does anyone know who first expressed this musical concept? The phrase was used by the Trappist monk Thomas Merton to describe monastic life, but I first encountered it as the title of a jazz album by the vibist Joe Locke.
