I think that my tonguing problem may mostly, or partly stem from my tongue not pulling far enough away from the reed. It seems that when I purposely try to make sure my tongue pulls back a good amount, then I articulate more cleanly and faster. This is difficult to do consistently, but it seems to help. Is anyone familiar with this kind of thing or do I just THINK that this is the reason?

Just as long as you ARE pulling away from the reed enough for it to make a sound, it should be far enough. The closer you can keep your tongue to the reed without touching it (meaning the less you pull it back), the faster you will be able to tongue due to it being that much less of a trip your tongue has to make.
I'm not sure what your particular problem would be, but I'm thinking it might be just timing between your tongue and fingers.
I always go back to Ken Shaw's post of tonguing (even bookmarked it). So here's THAT thread for you.

Maybe that'll help a bit.

Well, what I mean is, sometimes it seems like my tongue gets stuck there. But that's probably because it's not developed enough?
