WQXR has limited it's internet audio stream

WQXR for those who may not know is a classical station broadcast out of NYC. It's associated with the New York Times.

I went to www.wqxr.com tonight to listen to some music and found out that they have changed from it being free, to it being available 24/7 only for AOL subscribers and the rest of the world gets to listen for two hours a day for free.

I'm sure I'm missing out on all the facts (perhaps they needed funding and AOL offerred them a deal they can't refuse), but I just don't understand how in a world where classical music seems to be fading slowly but surely to begin with, that they would keep an online stream from the public. ESPECIALLY since it's broadcast on public radio anyway.

Just a little venting. I think it's pretty stupid (once again, I don't know everythign behind it, but you have to figure they ARE going to lose faithful listeners who maybe didn't have a working radio near their computer.)

is the download site for that program. It is completely free and you don't have to be an AOL member to have it. I've had it for about a year now and it's the best streaming program I've seen. Tons of channels.

This is a great site that has a ton of radio links for the internet and classical music. It's not as concise as these programs may by, but you can get broadcasts from around the globe.

It's not quite true that the "rest of the world gets to listen for two hours a day." I use a Macintosh and when I try to listen I am told that my computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements. Apparently their streaming software is Windows only.

Its Windows or AOL. What a choice!

So, I am even more pissed off than you are.

What's the reason for public radio stations limiting or eliminating audio stream of their programming? It seems to me a no brainer as far as economics go. The potential for soliciting online support has to be tremendous.

Being a long-time AOL-er, at least putting up with its ups and downs, I had WQXR Listen in my Fav. Places, clicked it, came on after a short wait, much more user-friendly now than before, selected Romantic under Classical, came right on [previous volume setting was good!!]. It serves as very pleasant background [calming] music for surfing, much better than sonic wallpaper ! Some ads and news tho ! TKS for pointing out its fine changes. Don
