 Buffet R-13 or Festival
Author: BandMom

I am considering buying my 15 year old son an upgraded clarinet. He wants a Buffet and I have the opportunity to purchase an almost new Festival. The Festival belongs to a college student who was told he should have an R-13 to play in a symphony orchestra. I don't want to be in the same situation at a future date if I purchase the Festive. Is it better to buy an R-13? I would appreciate your imput. I am also told the Festival is an excellent clarinet and plays beautifully. I am only hesitating because it seems the R-13 is the most preferred. I appreciate your insights.

My son (a performer & teacher in Tokyo, graduated from the Cleveland Inst. of Music) has been playing his Festivals for the last 7 years. A friend of mine in the Dallas Opera Orchestra loves his. If they're good they'll do fine.

That being said, my son would like a pair of RCs someday, too - there is a difference between all the models.

The "Festival" and "Vintage" Buffets are a minor variation of the R13, with slightly different tradeoffs, but are R13s at heart.

Is the used Festival the same price as you could buy a new R-13? If so, you might consider getting the new R-13 so that your son might not encounter the same requirements in the future that the owner of the Festival encountered. I agree with Mark that the Festival is an excellent instrument.

That wouldn't be Forest Aten, would it?

Phil Green beat me in two auditions for pro orchestras playing Festival (i play R13, so the job is really MINE!)(just joking) and has spent the last three years here in NZ playing hundreds of concerts as soloist and orchestra principal on Buffet Festival. If the college student who is selling this horn was told that they needed an R13 to play in orchestra it was for one of two reasons.....
1) the person giving the advice is a fool.
2) the Festival clarinet in question isn't a very good instrument, and the teacher was trying to encourage the student to abandon it.
another possibility is......
3) the student selling the instrument has issues with it, but doesn't want to discourage potential buyers so is coming up with an imaginative response to the question "why are you selling?"
make sure that the instrument is checked over and played by an experienced clarinetist.
