Alrighty! So I'm a 15 year old big band, new orleans jazz, and...van morrison addict. And for Christmas, I am finally getting a clarinet. I get to go pick one out in a few days...
And thats where you all come in. What do I need to know? Any tips? I'm planning on learning clarinet and picking up sax later...good plan?
Any help would be greatly apprectiated.

Use the "search" function of this board with a few key words like "beginner" or "which clarinet" or "best clarinet for beginner", and you will find all sorts of information.
Bottom line for many posters who have answered this question is the Forte clarinet, advertised on this board by "The Doctor". It's a great deal. Search on "Forte clarinet", too!

Rent first - buy later.
Get a fixed-term rental from a reputable LOCAL repair shop.
If you still dig the licqourice stick, in a few "Astral Weeks", then you are indeed ready to walk down the "Bright side of the Road".
FYI - The Ridenour TR147 is a hard rubber clarinet with an excellent scale, and sweet sound. Hard rubber and plastic clarinets are difficult to break.
As to saxophones, the Antigua Winds line of saxophones from Taiwan are surprisingly good for their cost.
Try searching "Sax on the Web" for a forum that more routinely covers saxophone interests.
Also, <www.yankelswarehouse.com> has a VERY inexpensive wooden clarinet, from a Czech maker, Ernst Reidl for only a little money. Not the most wonderful clarinet I've ever played, but it was less than $200 - NEW.

'Really pleased to see Van the Man Morrison putting a clarinet forward in many of his recent tunes. Van's traveling band, however, showed no clarinet...
Then again, cheez, who needs to put a clarinet up with the power in that brass ensemble?

Most people I know try to talk me out of a clarinet...hm. OH! mouthpieces...any advice on them 'uns? Yes, just a tad clueless.

If you get a Forte from our friend, The Doctor (a sponsor), he gives you a great beginner mouthpiece by Gennusa. No need to buy anything else. He also provides a great ligature (a term you'll become familiar with).
It's also a great price. So, you can also afford to buy a sax within a reasonable amount of time.
