Good Venue for new players

Try volunteer work at the Salvation Army kettles. Holiday tunes can be pretty basic and easy to play, the audience is rather easy to please and you might help fatten the coffers of a worthwile organization. I'm having a ball this holiday season. Of course the "Will Stop Playing for Money" sign keeps 'em chuckling.

Seriously, though, I'm learning a lot and providing a great holiday atmosphere to the harried shoppers. This is something I'll do again next year.

I've wanted to do this for YEARS. The problem is finding others that want to. (Many say they do, but don't follow through with contacting each other or never seem to 'have the time')

I used to do this. At least where I played, they gave me a bell to switch off on every 15 minutes to rest my chops.

Clarinet is hard to play in the cold, so I switched to alto sax. This let me learn how to get out the low notes without honking or jumping up an octave. Also, I could wear gloves.

There's no pay (or at least there wasn't when I did it), but you're doing a good deed, and there's a lot of reward when you catch a kid's eye, play Rudolf and get a big grin. I also played a lot of Schubert.
