i am looking for a cheap mouthpiece on ebay to go with my old beginner's clarinet to use this as an alternate horn for traveling, etc. does anyone have a suggestion on what kind of mouthpiece to get? there are so many on ebay ranging from .99 to 100s of dollars. i want to get something cheap (under 20 bucks) and the only requirement is that it plays decently. i used to play on a vandoren mouthpiece that i was satisfied with but i don't know what model number. selmer has g, h series which i don't know what tha means. among vito, vandoren, selmer, bundy and other mediocre brands which do people recommend?

Not sure you'll get anyone recommending a "mediocre" mouthpiece.
Why not go to a shop and try out mouthpieces to find one that plays similarly to your first line m/p. Then coming back to your first line clar will only have finger position issues.
Suggest a search here for info on less expensive 'pieces - I'm sure there is a wealth of info on various search criteria - it's a great tool !

the debut is a very good mouthpiece.
use the mediocre ones for paperweights. they make wonderful paperweights.
we know what cso's are. what should we label those generic $5 mouthpieces? MSO's?

Buffet Crampon Band Masters mouthpiece. It's about $20. It's worked well enough for me.

Hite Premier
They are 2 proven mouthpieces, easily affordable, consistant, reed friendly, and with well thought out facings.
Students can safely use either all through high school with excellent results.
Adults who are restarting also find them to be an excellent choice.
The good news: Each sells for less than half the price of a single Vandoren mouthpiece.
Another excellent choice would be the Gennusa student mouthpiece - specifically the GE*. It sells for about $45 and the facings are very silmilar to the more expensive Gennusa models, but on a plastic blank.
BTW - The Gennusa GE*S was selected to be the mouthpiece that is included in the new Forte student clarinet....GBK

I would have to say that the most mediocre mouthpiece is the vintage chedeville, second only by the chicago kaspar.

I don't know, Rod. I think the Cicero Kaspars are pretty mediocre as well.
Try Brad Behn's student mouthpiece. Pretty darned good 'piece for the price and it is hand-finished:

Fobes Debut is great. You can likely find a good price on a used Vandoren at a reasonable price. Advantage to that would be that it is a hard rubber mouthpiece.

Now that I'm "back on", after having a "TOS" blockage, guess some *&^% hacker broke thru my security, I have , a few times, asked my fav repairer to allow me to look thru his mp junk box, and buy/steal a recognizably decent oldie [for a "song"]. $5-10. Or like recently, when repairing a cheap/decent student cl from EBAY, or elsewhere, find a good mp, a recent one was a Woodwind "Educator" with a G8 !!! facing, which I quickly promoted to a better cl ! So, look for/try out mps, some are goodies! Don

Don't buy a mouthpiece on eBay at this point. With any used mouthpiece, there's always the problem that it may be worn out.
Fobes, Hite, Ridenour, Pyne and others makegreat mouthpieces for around $35. If you don't want to pay that much, the Yamaha plastic mouthpiece is perfectly usable, at around $20, and is available at any music store.

I second the Yamaha plastic student mpc. They work well for the beginners that I work with every time--and if they drop it (and it breaks), just buy a new one for cheap!!
