I always hear all this hullabaloo about R13 buffets and mine is an E13... what's the difference?

R13 is the top level. E13 is just an intermediate. That was really simplified I'm sure someone that knows the features better will give more exact list of features.

Buffet E-13 is semiprofessional clarinet. The wood that doesn't qualify for an R-13 is used for E-13.
E-13 is also equipped with intermediate level keywork and receives less hand finishing than R -13. Clarinet is manufactured in France.
All intermediate and student level Buffet clarinets are made in Germany.

Yes, the E-13 would be adequate for a student player. But, if your student is serious about the clarinet and he/she thinks they might want to play in college, I recommend going for the R-13. The wood is better and you'll never need to buy him/her another instrument.
