What recommendations do you have for mouthpieces for Eb Contra-alto clarinets? Plastic or hard rubber or both? Thanks -

Unfortunately that is really the only choice...plastic or hard rubber. If money isn't an issue, and you'll be playing contra for a while (or you own it) then I would say go for a hard rubber mouthpiece. That's usually a better material to go with.
Kontragirl, who plays on the mouthpiece that came with her contra alto.

I have two MPs for my LeBlanc EEb contra. As far as I know, both are hard rubber, but I could be wrong. The original MP is the older LeBlanc sized and cut for a full sized VanDoren contra reed. It plays good on a #2, but is stuffy ona #3. Sounds really great in the low register. The other MP is a Selmer (no noticable model markings) and is sized and cut for a bari sax reed. It doesn't quite have the great tone in the low register, but seems alittle better in the upper. Plus if it takes a little less air volume which is great if you have whole notes tied for several measures. It plays OK with VD #2 or 2.5. Haven't tried a #3 on it yet. I love my contra contraption, but be careful, you don't have to be rough with it, just look at it hard and you can knock it out of adjustment. Those loooong skinny keys and rods tend to bend too easy. If its a metal LeBlanc like mine, you'll find its easy to bend the posts (where the screws are) with only a minor bump. If you have broadcast TV (not cable) you can hit low E or F and watch the picture do weird things, try it its fun.

you get the morray effects on a computer monitor, too. However, there was a lot of disccussion on the contra
list and in some cases the patter shifting is due to
your eyeball vibrating, not the screen vibrating.
I use a selmar C* on a Vito and like it a lot. Don't know
if it would like it on a different horn. Contras vary in bore size, which means that a mouthpiece may sound very different on a different horn

I've never heard of a contra mailing list. Sure, I've heard of a bass clarinet mailing list, but contra? Where could I find that? That is just too interesting to pass up! Where do I sign up?

Go to Grant Green's Contrabass Maniac web page at:
http://www.contrabass.com
where you can find instructions on how to sign up for the mailing list. It's a great list! Right now it's mired in an extremely technical discussion of chord progressions, but I think that's a first. Usually we stick to talking about the basso monsters. The list has archives on the site. The page also includes information archives with humor, pictures of rare and unusual bass beasties and so forth.
