I had oral surgey this week to remove 2 impacted teeth,a canine and a molar both upper as well as a lower molar.Although prepared for some pain and discomfort I hadn't expected it to the degree I am experiencing .The dental surgeon predicted a week of not playing clarinet,I think this is highly optimisic.Does anyone on the board have similar experience and could you advise me on this.I wish I hadn't had it done,many thanks

Cara, you will appreciate the surgery in due course. Using anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen will help things to settle down more quickly, but the holes in your gums have to heal before you will feel like blowing your horn. Be patient.

If you had not had it done, you would someday be facing worse problems that would have been even more difficult and painful to correct. This is one of those things you shouldn't put off.

Argh!! I hate dental problems as much as anyone. I had all four wisdom teeth removed at one time and despite the surgen saying I would be back to playing in about a week it took about 2.5 weeks for the swelling to go down and then longer for me to get a good seal on the mouthpiece. I ended up dropping from Wind Symphony to Symphonic band and having to decline first chair since I would be starting slow. That was actually my last semester of playing in the groups while I was an undergraduate. But on the up side I did recover and things are better than ever and the precedure does prevent major problems in the future. SO HANG IN THERE.....

I would be more worried about that molar. Sometimes the roots of a molar are so long that the only thing separating the root area from the sinus cavity was a thin membrane. My wife had this problem and the dentist gave her special medicines before and after her "toothectomy". The Doc. said a good sneeze or even playing the flute could blow this membrane through causing major problems. Take it easy, let it heal.

With any of your meds, take plenty of water. It's easier on
the stomach and flushes out the badies. If you are taking antibiotics, some yogurt is a helpful dietary addition, too.
