I just had a concert with our high school jazz band and the schedualed soloist didn't show up... Hmmmm... well our band director told me to do an improv. well i did.. and it stunk. So is there any real trick to improvisation on the clarinet.. i can do it find on the bass guitar.. but it just feels different on the clarinet..

Study your scales, learn to improv in any key, know ii-V7-I progression like the back of your hand, and most important LISTEN to the masters...not just on clarinet...check out sax,trumpet,trombone,etc...If your looking for books to invest in check out Jamey Aebersold's "How to PLay Jazz and Improvise" it comes with a CD to help you feel comfortable playing and improvising...Good Luck

Improvising is difficult to master but if you know your scales and arpeggios you're headed in the right direction. Like anything, it just takes a lot of practice. A good place to start is by taking the melody of the song you're improvising during and making your own adjustments to it by changing the rhythm or playing it backwords. If you have trouble reading the chord changes you could write a couple solos to get a feel for them and then go off that. Even if you know the chord changes well it is still helpful to write out some stuff so you have some riffs in your head. Good luck
