 Hey, Down Under!

I know a few of the members of this bboard are Aussies, so I would like to pose a question to you. What is the music program of the University of New South Whales like? I ask because in my never-ending search for a school with a wind instrument/acoustics program, I have found little beside the UNSW in Sydney. As an American who loves nature as much as music and science, I would love to go and study on my favorite continent, but I would imagine that college visitations would be a little difficult for me. They have a very good wind instrument acoustics lab, and I am wondering if it would be worth my time and effort to find out about international applications. Thanks all!

PS if you know of any other schools, international or no, with a good acoustics program, please tell me. I am also considering Carnegie Mellon because I know of some people who work there and have the utmost respect for its music and physic programs. Thanks!

Topher ... the Music program at UNSW is an unknown to me, I'm afraid. The Sydney Conservatorium (as it's labelled) is now run by the University of Sydney. Having said that, I've heard good reports about both UNSW and the University of Wollongong for their Arts/Music programs.

I suggest you acquaint yourself with their website and ask questions to the head of the faculty of music. But you'd need to be quick as enrollments for next year's courses are currently being finalised.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

I think they may already be finished - but of course, late applications are available, at a fee.

Fees, yes ... you'll be a full fee paying category person ... this can be expensive.

I don't have to worry about getting an application in yet, as I am still a junior. Thanks for your help, though.

Topher -- slightly off-topic (in that it involves the "wrong" woodwind instrument) ... have you seen the Uni of NSW's "virtual flute" site? Interesting stuff!

www.phys.unsw.edu.au/music/flute/virtual/main.html

Perhaps the guy could be prompted to develop a similar site for clarinet...

cheers -- db -- Sydney, Australia

As i understand it Topher is looking for an Acoustics program (usually part of a physics dept, surely?) rather than a music program.
my number one buddy and science genius, Ian Whaley, is a researcher in Acoustics for Auckland University (NZ)- i'll ask him tomorrow if he knows of good programs in Aussie (a rather large country nearby, they speak english too!). NZ counts as "down under", so i'll find out how our graduate programs in Acoustics stack up internationally.
if it's MUSIC you're after- in aussie i'd look at the Brisbane con or the con in Sydney (where you could study with Frank Celata, Assoc Principal of SSO and has reccently played acting principal for London symphony- a damm good player and teacher....).

donald ... he's from Down Under so can't be anything BUT a provincial player, goodness knows how got into the London Symphony?!?

Yes ... acoustics is part of physics, of course, University of Technology, Sydney (on Broadway) has a very well recognised applied physics department, headed up by a wonderful woman who happens to be a fantastic pianist, too.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.
