 protruding LH E/B Key
Author: lycfmtkl

Yesterday, I went to my local music store to choose a Buffet R13. One of the clarinet has a protruded LH E/B Key. That's makes a bit uncomfortable to my left little finger. The salesman said that it's a new design of the R13. Can anyone tell me if this is true ?

I finally bought a R13 with a normal LH E Key. I pay Hong Kong $17000 which equals about US $2180. The price is bit lower in Hong Kong here.

Hopefully, some of our reader-responders [skillful repairers] will answer with greater knowledge re: Buffets and ?new designs? than I have. It sounds like that Buff has a bent [upward]? E/B key. The E/B and the F#/C# should be at the same level for fingering ease, and not interfering with the L H F/C key below it. I noted a diff. structure of those keys on my recently acquired [used] USA Selmer Omega, and do like it ! I believe you made a good choice, Hong Kong sounds somewhat expensive to me [in Okla!]. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

I don't know about the new R13's, but what they have done sounds like a good idea to me. Whenever I buy a new clarinet, one of the first things that I do is bend the E/B key up a bit. This stops me from accidentally touching the F#/C# key when reaching across for the E/B key with my LH pinkie. I guess it's personal though, depending on the shape of your hand.

I think the instrument just had a bent key, and the salesman was feeding you a line of @#$%&*.

It's all in what you get used to. The Bundy I started on had the left-hand low E key a little lower than the low F# key next to it, and I've bent the keys on every succeeding instrument to be what's "natural" feeling for me.

Reginald Kell had his left hand low E key bent nearly straight up (and the side low Eb key for the right index finger knuckle bent to point toward the bell).

If you like the instrument, by all means buy it and take it to a repair shop to have it adjusted to fit your preferences.

Best regards.

I agree with Ken Shaw, I've recently tried many buffets because I was searching a new instrument (ended up with a Leblanc OPUSII, go figure)....But haven't seen a single one with your discription.
