Does anyone have information about "Doc" Behrendson, who was
active in the 1919-1922 years on many fine records. He recorded
many classics with Lanin's Southern Serenaders, Ladd's Black Aces,
etc.
Some of those performances are now available on the Timeless CD
label or the "redhotbands" site, but there's not much information aside
from his being active in New Orleans in the WWI era, was a dentist & so
was called "Doc".
He became disillusioned with the music business after his NYC era & returned to New Orleans to continue to be a dentist (being replaced by Jimmy Lytell). Yet Doc's among the finest of the earliest jazz clarinetists, even soloing extremely interestingly.
