what is the difference between a red box of Gonzalez reeds, a blue box and a black box?

Gonzalez makes 3 different types, or cuts of clarinet reeds.
The Gonzalez FOF reeds now come in blue/brown boxes. You may also still find them in the "first generation" packaging which was a brown/black box.
Gonzalez regular cut reeds come in a red/brown box.
The Mozart reeds are packaged in an all red box ...GBK

The red box makes the reeds play slightly brighter, whereas the blue box darkens the tone but unfortunately makes the altissimo a bit more resistant. The black box improves intonation but has the unfortunate side effect of dampening the 'ping' of the upper clarion tones. The brown color added to some of the boxes makes the chalumeau more resonant but causes the twelfths to spread a bit. I'm just guessing about all of this, but I read it on the Internet so it must be true.

The colors help to identify the reeds in the dark when you can't read the strength numbers...

do a search on the bulletin board for "Gonazles" (did i spell it right?) and you will find lots of stuff
i was not so impressed with these reeds when i first tried them a couple of years ago, but think that they've improved. Certainly, i would not hesitate to say that in my opinion the "normal" (thinner blank) reeds are much better than the Vandoren Blue box or the other "non thick blank" reeds available. i don't claim that every reed in the box is great, but i believe you will get much better value for your dollar from a box of these reeds. The FOF thick blank reeds i'm not as keen on and don't know anyone who plays them (other than people on this board), but they may suite you- i do believe that these reeds have improved since i first tried them.
