I am overwhelmed by the large sample of replies I received - I can't possibly respond separately to them all - thanks very much! As I am in Canada, I won't ask about good places to buy/rent-to-own, as you are mostly in the US I imagine. I will look around for leads on some of the recommended instruments, and see what I can find in good mouthpieces. I think I like the rent-to-own option best, as mere renting will gain us a used student model, and one never knows how it has been treated (or mis-treated). I would rather start with a known quantity as we did with the piano and flute for our daughter. Thanks again, and I'm sure I'll be back with more questions before long.

A good place to rent in Canada is Long & McQuade.
They carry Yamaha and Selmer (in Ontario). It looks like they have 4 stores in BC and you can find them here: http://www.long-mcquade.com/
It's probably a good idea to buy their $1 per month insurance policy which protects you against accidental damage and loss.
Take an experienced player with you to test it. I helped a neighbour rent one a few weeks ago and the first one they gave her was not playable, which surprised me. The second one was perfect.

I would agree with the Long & McQuade recomendation. I think they also have a rent to own policy. And this is a very internationl group! You have many fellow Canadians here.

Prussin music in Vancouver carries both Leblanc and Buffet, and can order in pretty much whatever you might want... they keep Normandy 4s and E11s in stock, usually. I don't know about anything in eastern Canada though.

MusicMom ... fortunately there's a goodly smattering of Canadians, Kiwis, Aussies and the odd Swede or two that keep the Americans under control ...
you've certainly come to the right place for advice on just about ANYthing ...
