Just wanted to see how many others here play in or have played in Military bands? I spent almost 9 years in the Marines in Albany, GA and Okinawa,Japan. Currently, I am in the Army and have been stationed in Fort Rucker, AL and now at Fort Jackson, SC.

Hi, Sarge -

Lots of folks here have been or are now with military bands. I was with two bands, eighteen months stateside and two and a half years overseas duty, during four years with the (U.S. Air Force). Some people like the military, some prefer civilian life. Military service was a good experience , I just didn't want to make a career of it. For those who like it, the pay is not too bad (depending on where you're stationed), benefits and retirement is better than many civilian music jobs.

Me, too, MANY years ago. 50th Army Band at Ft. Monroe, VA, from 1961 to 1963. Mostly bass clarinet (marched with a Bb clarinet), and alto sax in the jazz band. All in all, a pretty good way to spend two years.

Hi,

Signal Training Center Band, Ft. Gordon, GA from late 1958 to June 1961. Played alto sax, flute & piccolo, and was the director for the last year; there was a bigger need for me to do that than play clarinet.

We did a lot of thngs with the two other bands at Ft. Grodon, the 434 Army Band, and the Provost Marshal Training Center Band. When we would combine all three for really big events (Masters Parade, major dignitarty visits, etc.) it was a terrific group.

Howdy,

I was stationed in the Marine Band Albany, GA from 1996 to 1999. I went to school at Georgia Tech and am currently an engineer. My wife and I reside in middle Georgia.

Albany was a good base. Who was the Band Officer during your tour? We've probably crossed paths somewhere along the line as that band isn't very old.

Greg, Yeah I remember you. Dick Miller was the band officer then. A lot of fond memories about that band, and also a lot to forget! How is civilian life treating you? Do you ever keep in touch with anyone from back then?

Good to be reminded of the good old days in Korea and Camp Carson during 1953-56. The 18 months in Korea was not a real great musical experience, mostly outside marching events. But the Camp Carson assignment was fun, including a pit band performance for a musical, drawing on both military and civilian people from the Colorado Springs area. -- John
