I wrote a piece for clarinet solo last year, about 6 minutes long. The reception at its premiere (university composers' guild concert) went pretty well. If anyone's interested, I might be willing to send a few copies out, but I'd prefer to rework some bits of it first. (the third movement is fiendishly difficult, and some minor things can be changed to ease the feelings of bloody murder toward the composer).

Other than that, what's your definition of "new"?

Wilfred Josephs' sonatas.
Only heard the second one - opus 149, but haven't yet gotten a chance to hear the first one. Nice short virtuostic sonata premiered (1990) and recorded by London clarinetist Martin Powell.

John Williams' concerto, premiered by LA Philharmonic principal clarinet Michele Zukovsky. Forgot when exactly.

Luciano Berio and the lengendary Krzysztof Penderecki both wrote concertos in the mid/late 1990's for French clarinetist Paul Meyer.

Richard Lavanda (spelling), a composition teacher at Rice University in Houston wrote a Concerto that will be premiered by David Peck and the Houston Symphony next year.

On a self-indulgent note... I've written a bass clarinet sonata and am finishing a clarinet sonata.

I wish John Corigliano would write a clarinet sonata!! Maybe when i'm older and more affluent, I'll squander my savings commissioning one from him!

Richard Stoltzman has had more than 10 new works written specifically for him:

Sean Osborn has written a number of new works for clarinet, all of which are challenging and very rewarding musically.

the John Williams concerto sounds interesting I assume it's the film composer. Any info about the concerto has it been played here in the UK. Would love to do the London premier. Would also love to have copies of any of the other works I could always slip them them into a couple of the recitals in the future

For the Williams concerto, see http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/articles/2000/19_May---Film_Score_Friday.asp

which suggests that its premiere was also its derniere. No idea whether that is actually correct.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

does anyone know if the John Williams clarinet concerto is published, the review that was posted by David Peacham suggests that the work is not as good as the bassoon concerto or tuba concerto. Could raise an interesting question of player composer relationship. If the work is published would it be Hal Lenard(?)?

Alex,
Are you still offering copies of your clarinet solo that you did last year? If so, I'm interested. Shoot a reply or me an e-mail. Thanks!

I am anxiously waiting for David Peck's performance of Concertino along with the premier...but there is a beautiful classical jazz concerto written by Jeff Beal. I have the website where you can listen to it. It was premiered by Larry Combs, and has been performed by D'Rivera and Eddie Daniels. The recording is of Eddie Daniels being accompanied by the Houston Youth Symphony (which I'll be participating in next year). Off topic, the HYS is having an event where the players of the HSO sit in with each section of HYS. So that'll be fun. BUT ANYWAY...

Steffen Mahnkopf, Die Schlangen der Medusa
Misato Mochizuki, En Arcades
Olga Rajewa, Relief in den Klarinettenfarbtönen

Killer compositions, really, but worth every effort, they stunningly beautiful (especially in Mochizukis case it is so incredible that she is so young and has written already monstruously complex works...I feel very old then...).

I assume you're only interested in American music ... but if not the Australian Music Centre maintains an excellent database of contemporary Australian (and some NZ) compositions for clarinet. Refer:

http://www.amcoz.com.au/

Gordon Kerry, a quite famous Australian composer has written a concerto which was premiered by the Sydney Symphony's 2nd Clarinetist ... it's beautiful (and extremely challenging).

disclaimer ... I do not work for AMCOZ ...

Diz,

I've been wondering. Does Austrailian music have its own distinct sound? I would really enjoy hearing some music by nationalist Austrailian composers. And could you tell me what are characteristics of Austrailian pieces, such as melodies and chords?

Thanks.

Gazebo ... that's almost an unanswerable question, frankly.

Peter Sculthorpe is probably the one Australian composer (apart from Percy Grainger) who has resonance around the world ... he certainly has a unique voice.

Colin Brumby (Melbourne born, based in Brisbane) has written a concerto for just about every orchestral instrument. His music is, really, neo-romantic meaning Brahms problably wouldn't have been too offended by it. He also has his own style, I happen to like his music a lot, when many think he's "too romantic". He has written a stunning clarinet concerto (that is rarely performed, unfortunately). Interestingly, Brumby's orchestral writting is often scored for smallish orchestra (2222 223 1 Strs), this means that many smaller ensembles can play them without getting stressed over having four horns or huge numbers of strings.

Gordon Kerry's clarinet concerto is magnificent (only written in the last 5 years).

Elena Kats-Chernin is a very popular contemporary composer, she seems to get a lot of air-time via our national broadcaster ... the ABC.

Ross Edwards (also very famous) has written a host of music including a beautiful (and frighteningly difficult) oboe concerto (written for Diana Doherty - of the Sydney Symph.).

Carl Vine seems to have fallen slightly from favour, he once got a lot of commissions from ABC orchestras ... I guess it's a matter of sharing the funding around equitably.

The AMC also sells Australian composers' music on CD plus full scores and parts for it's entire range.

I've only mentioned a tiny fraction ... I recommend you look at the AMC's website ... it's brilliant, it also includes complete listings of instrumentation for all symphonic works.

Oh yeah ... and there's a poster to this BB that has written quite a bit of music for clarinet ensembles of varying sizes including a recent "concerto grosso" for Basset Horn and Two Clarinet Choirs ...

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.
