 Hi all!

Hola!
This may not be custom on this message board, but it seems that people are familliar with eachother, so I will introduce myself (a bit late!) My name is Sean Ross. I go to Lakewood High School in Lakewood, Colorado (USA). I take lessons with Don Ambler.
Now that it is summer, I am doing marching band. We started rehersals in May and are very excited about this year's show. The music is all Key Poulan origional work: "Chisels and Stone" from Key's marching show "The Rise and Fall of Rome", "Hope" from Key's marching show "Pandora's Box", and " Checkered Flag" from Key's show "The Need for Speed -- A Tribute to NASCAR". I'm Saxophone section leader this year, and all the kids in my section are doing great. All of us here in Colorado are super-excited about DCI Nationals being here at our own Invesco Field at Mile High.
I am happy to be a part of this web community, and have already learned a lot. You're all so great to answer our (amature's) questions!!!! I hope that there are some more people from Colorado in here. Especially from Salida, where I used to live. I hope to see you all lots!!
Cheers,
Sean

Hi, Sean!

(We've already met, I know :) ) ...but, better late than never.

It's always nice when 'new folks' come around. In my meager estimation we all learn as much from you as you do by dropping in. Many of us "old timers" know one another just from having exchanged info and kidding around for a while and such. That doesn't mean, or even imply, that this is some kind of exclusive gathering. The purpose is to be as In-clusive as possible (within the 'rules', of course) and as helpful and civil as we know how. From your "credentials" I'd guess you have a lot to offer (you already have, by the way) so I urge you to visit often. Glad you found our "hangout"... :)

Thanks Ron B!
Cheers as usual!
Sean

P.S. I've just noticed my excessive use of exclamation points! I hope that's not how I play!!

p.s. I'm a youngster yet, and I hope what I'm saying is right, but if it's not then give me a shout so that I may stand corrected!

We played all of Rise and Fall of Rome my freshman year for various marching festivals, and I'm quite familiar with Pandora's Box, though I never did any marching with it. I have a recording of us playing the entire Rome piece at the Zia Marching Festival, I can get it to you if you like, and if not, I won't be offended, just an offer. Of note: we don't sound quite as good as the version available from the creative solutions website. Our recording involves much blasting, nasty brass sounds, and well, pretty much everything associated with a high school marching band! We did, however, take first in state (New Mexico), and 5th overall, so not bad, I suppose.

Incidentally, it's a shame that you're not playing the entire Rome piece, as you said you play saxophone. Catacombs (the second movement) has a beautiful sax solo. In any case, welcome, though I'm only a few months older than you in respect to this board. It really is a great place, not just for the knowledge floating around, but because almost everyone is friendly, and a good amount are pretty witty. Just don't be surprised if someone should break out into poetry in the middle of one of your topics.

Hola Igloo Bob!
Thanks for the info and welcome. Did you march all through high school? I would love to hear your recording. What year did you march Rise and Fall? It's interesting music, fun to play. I will tell you that our show (the part with Chisels and Stone) won't sound like Poulan's website either, because our show concept is "Dance!" Our opener is chisels, but for the show it's going to be called Club, and instead of the "construction noises" at the beginning, there will be a guard feature and probably some pretty fun drill. Our visual instructor has naver failed to hand us death in the form of drill charts. Thanks again!
Cheers,
Sean

Unfortunately, no. I've since moved to Alaska, where there's no marching in sight. I'll be a senior in high school this next year. I'll e-mail the recording to you, though I'm on a 56k at the moment, so it may take a bit to get to your inbox.

My freshman year, so 2001, I believe.

Heh. Our opening consisted of the clarinets screaming for 10 seconds or so. Take that, complexity!

Complexity indeed!
I'll be a senior this year, too. Sounds like yall stuck with Poulan's origional ideas, and I'm afraid I may wish that we did too; I'm sure that there will be a bunch of horn line dancing. It might be fun, but probably not. Our visual staff are way into dance. What's the music program like up there in Alaska? Competitions or the like?

We have one competition per year, that involves us and the five other high schools in Anchorage (the only city with anything band-related worth mentioning), but no one really "wins", the school district up here is against competition, so we just ask the judge(s) for ratings, and compare. But no, we certainly wouldn't be competing! -_-

We also have all-state and solo and ensemble up here, but with Alaska being so sparsely populated, there isn't much competition for that. For instance, last year they had to hold re-auditions for the Contrabass Clarinet for all-state, because no one bothered to audition! I might've gone for it, had I already not done it for Bass Clarinet. That, and the Contra and I don't mix. At all.

How sad. Doesn't sound like music happens too much up there in old "Sewards Landing". At least it's nice scenery! I also hear that oranges can be hard to find. It must be a bear finding one to put peelings in a case with your wood horn.

Heh... one of the many perks of being related to military is that their grocery stores always have oranges! Off-base, I have no clue how hard they are to find.

May I also welcome you to our BBoard, Sean. As you have noticed, Ron B and I are good friends and make quite similar comment-posts on various threads. We happily have a number of real PROs and fine repairers who will post on occasion to improve our sometimes semi-pro advice/opinions. As to Colo. , we had a condo just "up the hill" from Durango for a number of very pleasant years. I played [Bb & Eb cls] in the very first [Silverton, 9300 ft!!] Great Rocky Mountain Brass Band [from the Durango band at that time] when they badly needed more/higher sop. brass [Eb+ tpts]. Still try to attend their mid-August week of concerts, they are VERY good! I'm afraid they still regard a sax as a reed inst, not a brass, tho, dern it. Try to get "up" there if possible. Look forward to your participation, here. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Sean, say "hi" to Mr. Ambler for me. He was my teacher back in... well... let's just say a while ago. He's an excellent teacher and a world-class clarinetist. Take advantage of everything he has to offer!

I will be sure to do that, MSloss!
Thanks for the welcome, Don Berger! My band director, Douglas G. Harris (I don't understand why he insists on the G.) plays trombone in the Rocky Mountain Brass. He is a great musician and does gigs all over the state, and beyond. Perhaps you know him? Have you heard of the Rocky Mountain Brass? They're not too bad. I hear them reherse near every teusday.
Thanks all!
Sean
