Ultimate Ligature vs. vandoren optimum ligature
Author: poopsie

does anyone know if the Ultimate Clarinet Ligature or the vanduren optimum ligature is better? I am reviewing the two and many comments about the quality of both have been excellent. I am confused and unsure of which to invest in. Anyone have any ideas on the subject?
Thanks bunches!

Neither. You need to try both to see which (if any) provides whatever you're looking for.

My daughter had a Vandoren optimum ligature but it produced a strange buzz on her setup. Next she tried a FL (ultimate) ligature, the buzz went away but it was a pain in the a$$ to put on correctly. She then went to the Peter Spriggs floating rail ligature and has been a happy camper ever since.

Hope this helps

Best Regards
Mark

Mark,

Is the peter spriggs ligature really that much easier to put on than the FL? They LOOK like they both go on about the same way . . .

I use the optimum and I'm very pleased with it! But, just as every human is different...try as many as you can and maybe you have a totally different taste of a good ligature.

Remember, finding a good setup is something that you will have to do yourself. I have found this very amusing because many people in our neighborhood don’t like my setup combination….but for me, it’s really heaven!

Alexi -

Hope Mark doesn't mind my butting in here, but I have both the Peter Spriggs & the FL (*and* a Vandoren Optimum ... and ... oops .. :) ) ... and believe me, the Peter Spriggs is MUCH easier to fit. I wondered the same as you, they look initially to be very similiar in design, but on getting the Peter Spriggs I found it to be a much more "robust" piece - and it is indeed much easier to fit. I struggled with the FL, I struggle no more with the Peter Spriggs.

cheers
Helen

It is all what you prefer. The Vandoren did not work for me. The Francois Louis Ultimate ligature works great. I am not sure what the complaint is about putting it on. I have never had ANY problem with it. It works beautifully.

Very interesting to note Helen. I do love my FL. But now am thinking about giving the Spriggs a try since it seems to be inherently the same design. And if the ease of use is there, why not? Not to mention I noticed in the other thread he'll soon be supplying Smart caps with all his ligatures (and I lost my smart cap that came with the FL so there's ANOTHER reason.)

Sigh. So many accessories to buy and so little in my weekly paycheck . . . C'est la vie . . .

Ed, the problem I have with the Ultimate lig is that the plate that comes in contact with the reed is wider than some of the newer types of reed like the Grand Concert Evolution or Gonzalez FOF or any other reed whose butt narrows down. How do you get around that?

Hmmm. I use the FL lig with Gonzalez FOF and my plate is ALMOST as wide. Not wider . . . but VERY close that I have to take great care in setting it (not NEARLY as quick as other ligs, but I really like the way it plays compared to the other ones that I've tried and so I stick with it.)

Even if you put it on the very butt of the reed where it IS slightly wider, you should still be able to tighten it and keep the reed clamped against the mouthpiece. And that's all you need.

I also use the ultimate with Gonzalez FOF and don't have any probs with width. I actually have got pretty quick at putting it on now, it helps that I also use one on Alto Sax.

Funny thing is.. i actually have both ultimate ligatures in gold and silver on my desk as i write this and my optimum.

I bought the ultimates a while back and really liked them both and kept them. They provide some benifits that I liked but I kind of felt like the ligatures played a little brighter than what I am used to.

I definatly prefer the gold over the silver one. I'd say get the optimum though, it is less fragile, and it works well.
