 Noise, Again
Author: Ken Shaw 2017

The Royal Scottish National Orchestra is experimenting with earplugs to protect the players' hearing. http://www.arts.scotsman.com/headlines_specific.cfm?id=8584

John Moses -- can you hear me? The last time this came up, you recommended Howard Leight earplugs. I sent a couple of emails to them, but they never responded. Please let us know how you order from them.

Best regards.

I love the bit comparing sitting in front of trombones and trumpets to a 12-pound field gun going off. Yeah, except the howitzer is more in tune.

Trying to teach a group of 13 year olds to play in the altissimo in an 8x8 practise room isn't recommended either. Ear plugs distort the sound excessively and make communication difficult. None of us knows sign language. Maybe they'll learn quickly before I go deaf....

The online Grainger catalog lists pretty much the entire line of Howard Leight hearing protection products:

http://www.grainger.com

Just pull down "Manufacturer" and plug "leight" into the search fields on their home page.

Grainger sells only to businesses, so you will have to have a DBA and open an account with them. They are a national outfit and very good to deal with.

Hi Ken:
Here's the scoop on the corded Howard Leight plugs:

Howard Leight Hearing Protection
7828 Waterville Road
San Diego, CA 92173
619-661-8383
800-327-1110

Order the corded MAX pre-shaped ear plugs NRR 33/SNR 34

They come in boxes of 100 plugs, in separate sealed bags.

I now order them directly from Leight's NJ distributor:

New Jersey Safety
973-962-6500

Again, I do not receive any remuneration from Leight or any hearing protection promotions, but I do highly recommend hearing protection for musicians.
