There wasn't a saxophone BBoard so I figure this is as good of a place as any to ask since there are clarinet players doubling on sax.
Right now I play Bb and Eb clarinet, but the tenor sax player at my school is quitting, thus opening a spot in the jazz band. I've been playing trombone in jazz band for the last two years, but my teacher doesn't want me playing it anymore. (Please don't start the argument about taking up multiple instruments...)
Anyways, I searched for Tenor saxophone topics on this BBoard already (yes I did my homework). It doesn't seem like most of you people had TOO MUCH trouble learning fingerings, etc. Correct? Of you guys, do you know what the usual range is on tenor for high school jazz lit?

You shouldn't have any trouble with the sax fingerings. They are very similiar to the clarion register fingerings on the clarinet. Your "normal" range is from a low Bb to an F above the staff. Some saxes have a high F# key, but it's just as easy to learn to play a high F# with altissimo fingerings.

I would say learning fingerings are the least of your worries....I believe you'll find sax figerings much easier than clarinet ( the "octave" key really is one!).......I would think learning to greatly relax your embouchure for tenor the bigger problem to playing well. And by all means check out the sax site mentioned above....vast amounts of info

Yep, they even have threads on the Forum for "Beginners", "Doublers" and "Geezer's" (But they don't call it that). Good stuff and maybe not so snarley at times giving answers to "newbys". And their jokes about clarinet players are just as funny. They even tell jokes on themselves--try that around here.
