I currently play a Selmer C* on my bass clarinet that was refaced by a friend (Tom Pawulski, if anyone has met him). It's great and works perfectly for me.
I'm thinking about getting a mouthpiece refaced for my Bb clarinet, but I'm not sure where to start. I went from a B45 to an M13 lyre (profile 88, so I went from very open to very closed). My articulation got significantly better with the more closed mpc. If I get a mpc that is already really closed, would refacing make a positive difference?
I have a Gigliotti P34 which should be a close match to the M13 Lyre, but it doesn't seem to play the same way. The articulation seems a little weak on it. Would refacing help it, or could it just make it worse? I don't know where to start.
It was almost luck that Tom refaced the bass mpc perfectly for me, because another refaced C* he let me try wasn't good for me at all. So I don't want to waste money or mpcs on facings I don't like.

or could it just make it worse? Always a possibility. It's a risk you take when modifying a mouthpiece. ALthough most technicians out there are good enough to know a GOOD mouthpiece from bad, and know when to stop.Quote:
I don't know where to start. Search on the boards for mouthpiece refacer or refacing or some similar word. Plenty of reviews and testimonies will come up (probably 99% of which are positive reviews). As for myself, I would say Dave S or (after getting my hands on and trying one of his mouthpieces out the the other day)Walter Grabner. Both have similar prices, and both are excellent at their craft.
Walter is a sponsor of the BBoard, and here's his website. http://www.clarinetxpress.com
Dave I don't believe is a sponsor of the BBoard, and I don't think his email is back up and running. But you can find his contact information under one of the links of Graham's Music (sponsor of the BBoard). http://www.grahams-music.com
There are others, but these two popped into my head right away that I know do refacing, and I can personally testify that they are great with mouthpieces.

Does re-facing help per se? No; why should it? Does it help with a worn mouthpiece or one that has the wrong tip opening for you? It might well do.

Contragirl,
Next time you see Tom Puwalski please tell him I said hi --- I've played a couple of big band rehearsals and gigs with him this past year -- I don't know how good his mouthpiece refacing work is, but his clarinet playing is phenomenal, I can only dream of playing as well as he does! He's also very modest and self-effacing, I don't think he realizes how good he is.
BTW, I don't want to make this a commercial message in any way, but my email is up and I can be reached at: dspieg@boblight.net.
