Does anyone have any tips on how to take care of wooden clarinets. I had a plastic clarinet to play on for my first year of playing. I just bought a wooden clarinet because the guy at the music store said they play easier and with better sound.Should I keep my plastic horn?

You should definitely keep your plastic horn! Wooden clarinets and marching band(or any playing outside) are not good for wooden clarinets.

While you should keep the plastic one for marching, playing outside on a pleasant, comfortable day is no worse for your wooden instrument than playing it indoors. However marching bands don't get to pick the weather and there is always the chance of dropping and damaging the instrument. It is better to risk the lesser expensive instrument.

To properly care for and protect a wood clar., most of the books with "Clarinet" in the title, Stein, Brymer, Pino, Lawson, Rendall, Willaman etc have fine advice as well great discussions of many features. Nearly every library should have at least one of these. Read, Don

In a quick nutshell, wood horns require more TLC than plastic. If you are uncomfortable outdoors (either too cold or too hot, too dry or too humid) then your wood horn would probably be at higher risk for damage. Ditto for the risk of dents, dings, and rough handling with a busy school or band environment.

General risk prevention is 80% of care for a wood horn.

As Don mentioned, there are good books out there that go into more detail. Read them for more specific hints.
