The best way to learn is to have a teacher. The teacher can then recommend to you study books, and help to supervise and guide you as you learn the proper ways of assembly, finger position, and most importantly embouchure (how your mouth forms around the mouthpiece/reed). I would think that weekly half hour sessions would be enough to make sure you're started on the proper path. Or bi-weekly if you can't afford weekly. The important thing is a good foundation to start from. Then you can decide if you want to continue lessons or try on your own, or whether maybe even if it's not right for you.

Also, an important note, most mouthpieces that come with the student clarinets are not good. At all. They are just "thrown in" to make it a complete set. Your best bet would be a Pyne Polycrystal, Fobes Debut, or Hite Premier for a good, cheap, quality beginner mouthpiece. A google or BBoard search on them will get you more info. And invest in some sort of clarinet 'kit'. Basically, you'll need a clarinet swab (I vote for the Docs Products black silk swab, sponsor under accessories), cork grease (once again I use Doc's brand), an eyeglass screwdriver (probably gonna be used for a loose screw, although it also does wonders at cleaning underneath your fingernail . . . [huh]), a reed case (I do fine with LaVoz, but there are TONS out there. A search will get you some good information), a pencil to keep in your case, Hmmm. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Good luck and this place is GREAT at answering questions and for advice. It's helped me (and a lot of others) often. Just make sure to do a search from now on before you post your question. Have fun.

Retired, playing more sax than clarinet, but still playing clarinet and still loving it!
