How do clarinet sales at clarinetfest work? I'm curious. I would think that you don't really have that much time to thoroughly try out clarinets, but are clarinets easily accessible to test? Would it be best for someone to keep in mind what clarinet they like so that they can order it and test it out at a later date?
Also, are clarinets usually cheaper at Clarinetfest than usual? I'm just wondering because I posted a reply in the Glotin/Chedeville thread as to how I think mouthpieces might work there, but I was wondering about clarinets too. Thanks.

Can't speak of Clarinetfest, but at the big music educator conventions here in Texas, you have to arrange purchase through a dealer if you want to buy a horn you try out. And the word on the street here is to make your deal on the last day, when manufacturers would rather sell than pack up and ship their stuff back home.

Most of the stores and makers bring selected, well set-up instruments to the festival. After all, they have a sophisticated customers, who are often ready to buy and who will judge the quality when they recommend models to their students.
The exception is Leblanc, which, at least in the past, has shown instruments in poor or even unplayable condition.
Several people have said that they found excellent instruments at the festival.
That said, a big, echoing room full of people trying to intimidate one another is an impossible place to give an instrument a careful trial. You will need to find a practice room, or, if you're working with a mouthpiece maker, set up an appointment at a quiet time.
