 probably been asked before...

This question has probably been asked before, but I was wondering do the Vandoren Blackmaster reeds fit a traditional mouthpiece (M-13, 5RV) or do you have to get the mouthpiece refaced or get a german mouthpiece. I'm wondering because I've heard good reviews about those reeds and I want to try them if they fit the American mouthpieces

AAHHH!

mitchell lurie premiums......and you'll not have to worry about refacing or MPC renewal. Seriously.....MLPs are the best

I remember Aussie Nick using black masters. But he used a Viotto MPC which was a german mouthpiece fitted to standard boehm instruments. So that doesn't count . . . . I really don't know. Email Vandoren would be my best advice. Since it is both THEIR reeds and THEIR mouthpieces, I'm sure they'll know and be able to answer.

they are the reeds in the black box correct?.... i'm horrible w/ names and don't have the box in front of me.... if they are the black box then yes they should work on your mouthpieces at the time i was using a 5RVlyre.... i think i still have a few lying around... I thought they were good just a little iffy at times intonation wise... but they played really well when everything was going in your favor....

I have never tried but White Masters are way too small across the tip and the vamp is too short. I suspect the Black Masters would have the same problem. I am a German system player, with German mouthpieces, and I find the Black Masters a little "tubby" ie. not flexible and a bit like hard work. I use white Masters, AW or Vintage D. I think German/Austrian style reeds are really meant for that type of mouthpiece.

I have never tried this myself, but at http://www.reeds-direct.co.uk/pages/brands.html it says that Black Masters can be used:

Manufactured for the Austrian market to fit narrow facing, narrow tip opening, long mouthpieces, the Vandoren German Cut White Master uses a shorter blank length and narrower width than standard file cut reeds. It is supplied with an unfiled shoulder design to help produce a darker sound. Suitable for German and Austrian mouthpieces only.
Available for Bb Clarinet

Vandoren German Cut Black Master reeds are wider than the White Master and a file cut is used. Although intended for the German market, Black Master reeds can be used with success on standard French or American style mouthpieces.
Available for Bb Clarinet

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Vandoren Black Masters fit almost perfectly on a French/American mouthpiece. They're about 1/2 mm. narrower than the standard and V-12 models. In fact, I prefer that width, since it gives you room to jog the reed slightly to the left or right to find the best spot. In fact, I always narrow down the standard and V-12 reeds to the Black Master width.

White Masters are too narrow for my mouthpieces.

Best regards.

My experience is that sometimes BlackMaster reeds can work with French style mpcs.

The mpc should have a long facing (I guess the M13 has a more or less long facing).

However on some mpc's the resistance will be too high and/or the tone will be too dull.
