Have any of you presented at ClarinetFest? I just received notice that I was not selected to speak about my afternoon with Artie Shaw. I guess that is something that will be done on a less formal basis in the bar drinking gin and tonics and toasting the King of the Clarinet.
I am always curious what the criteria are for proposals as everyone I know says they can't wait to hear about my interview with Artie (and the fact I survived it). Perhaps next time I submit, it will be something much more obscure and more "intellectual."

Jean,
IMO your interview with Artie would have made a great topic. I plan to attend Clarinetfest and look forward to hearing your presentation in the bar.
Regards,
Hans

Artie is always an intersting topic...I am not sure but it seems he really hasn't received the attention and merit he deserves. The flawlessness of his technique and the liquid tone he had is an inspiration...

Speaking of Artie, there is a two page article in the current Smithsonian Magazine (March 2003) showing one of two clarinets he donated to the Smithsonian (National Museum of American History), interesting because the barrel has no rings, before, I believe, anyone such as Lee Springer was making ringless barrels, and because the mouthpiece clearly shows the decorated bottom edge of a Chedeville mouthpiece. Two pictures of Artie, one "then" and one "now". Thank God for once there is no mention of Lana Turner, Ava Gardner or any of his other wives.
