Personally, I don't. Some players I know just stand or sit a couple of feet away from a regular mike, like a speaker's (lecturer's) mike and play. That seems to work pretty well for most outdoor situations. But then, most of my acquaintances (and I) are not very sophisticated

The AMT System One and the AKG C419 are also good sounding instrument-mounted mics, but neither is wireless (could be retrofitted). If you don't want clip-on, the Sure Beta 57 is a bomb-proof supercardioid mic that sounds decent and rejects everything that is off axis, making it great for stage situations.
