Thinking of selling, not an ad tho...
Author: Joe Garza

Hi everyone!

Well the time has finally come; I plan on selling my R13 in order to purchase a Buffet Vintage from Muncy Winds. I just had a real quick question as to what I should do. Here's the dilemma:

My R13 has a crack in it, not in the actual body or wall of any of the sections, but on a cork end. On the bottom joint, just under the cork, there is about 3/8" that had broken off in a nearly more fatal tragedy when the piece fell, though the rest of it is in perfect working order.

According to Muncy, I could have this repaired with a metal cap so as the price would not completely be depreciated from a flaw in the instrument. The missing section has never given me problems in playing nor has it seemed to affect my sound.

The question is, what would be my chances of getting a good sale price on a 5 year old R13 with the missing piece, and then with it repaired? Not looking for a buyer just yet, I'll be getting the Vintage first.

Thanks to anyone who can help.
Joe

Hold onto the instrument for at least one year.

Prices for second hand R13s are below $1000 USD on eBay, which is a real world marketplace. You may find that your older horn has life in it, yet!

Technically, if you hold onto it long enough, it itself will be considered "Vintage" and then you'll have one without having to have spent ANY money!

Your clarinet's value has been impaired by the damage previously done. It's not clear what the fix might be. New tenon or a tenon cap? the tenon cap might be a stop gap measure. of course, we all should be aware of the fact that there are many tenon caps in use which cover a void of some amount in the tenon's material.

sight unseen - I would guess that your instrument has a street value of $500 or less. Clarinets which need structural repair don't get better - often the situation worsens. IMO, clarinetists (as a group) are some of the worst "worriers". "crack" or "gouge" or "good-sized chip" evoke visions of impending doom. :)

I would also guess that your clarinet will not be worth much more than $750-800 when fixed. why buy a horn with a past problem, when you can buy the same clarinet with no history of past problems, capiche?

the problem with a repair is that if the repair is obvious, the fix has no significant value. that is, you may end up swapping repair dollars for sale dollars - or less. shipping to NC (Muncy) costs some "to & fro" $$ too. <BTW: Phil & his staff do great work!@>

repaired instruments have more value to the original owner - you know what the nature of the repair REALLY was - someone else only knows heresay.

there are several techs who specialize in tenon repairs. delrin is the material of choice for most, wood & plastic can match in color - but delrin is delrin and is not wood.

good luck,
mw

For those that do not know, mw is a very large seller of items on eBay, thus his opinion and expertise in this area is formidable.

He speaks from many years of buying and selling clarinets and clarinet related items.

I feel that his $ assessment of this particular clarinet is quite accurate...GBK

Totally agree with nw......My opinion, get if fixed and keep it. If you just have to have that other horn get a loan.

Depending on the "chip" size a mixture of epoxy, graphite, and grenadilla dust can come pretty damned close to looking like wood with significant structural stamina. I've done this before on bell end tenons with great success.

New clarinet is not always better than the old one. The chip on the tenon can be repaired (no metal caps, please) using grenadilla wood "dust" and special glues. This type of repair done correctly is almost undetectable.

BTW. I would buy this clarinet for $600 in an instance.

I had my 10G bell tenon repaired 12 years ago without capping, and I have had no problems, as Vytas and jbutler suggest. I wouldn't pay the same price for it that I would for a horn of the same age that has not been damaged in this way, but I wouldn't expect to get it for a song either. If you don't need the money for your new purchase, though, I would consider keeping it.

"I would buy this clarinet for $600 in an instance."
Yes, wouldn't we all! If it were mine I wouldn't hesitate an instant to use the epoxy repair mentioned....as I also have done it with excellent results. I am not meticulous about exterior appearance since I wouldn't sell either horn so repaired. I must add, however, that I've never used graphite in the mix and question if that really improves strength or is just for cosmetics.

Joe,

Graphite strands can be purchased through different suppliers, but you've got Ed Myers in San Antonio fairly close by (or email me, I'll send you some). I would have to see the area to tell you how to go about it, but basically I put painters tape on the inside of the bell tenon and a rubber plug (Lowes or Home Depot have them) in the tenon end to hold the tape to form. Put some vaseline around the areas you don't want the epoxy to adhere to (for easy clean up). Mix your epoxy and take the strands of graphite and saturate in them in the epoxy mixture and wrap around the where the chip is located. I take blackwood dust and layer it on as well to help blend in. By the way, if you use JB Weld epoxy it has a dark color to it and helps with the coloration also. You need to let dry and then clean and shape as necessary. Sometimes another application or two is necessary to fill in gaps or voids that might appear. You can also build a shoulder for the end by layering also. Some sanding a filing to make it look good is necessary. It just takes time and a little "sculpting". Using a 5 minute epoxy will cut down on dry times, but I prefer the 24 hour type. It can handle the stress better. I know this may sound simplistic, but it's more like artwork than anything.
