i just got a new box of reeds and this one im working on plays fine at about mf, but as i get softer it gets fuzzier. what could be causing this and how can i fix it?

To properly answer that question it would be of help to know the reed strength and mouthpiece/facing and possibly brand. Also which notes get fuzzy Higher/lower notes.

probably because you're not supporting with your air enough, and you are biting. Make sure to keep a consistant air stream and not bite. When you play softer, you actually have to increase the speed of your air and lessen the volume of it. Think of blowing through a coffee straw.

Another good way to describe the airstream I saw necessary (I saw it in another post I think) was to think about trying to blow out a candle that's far away from you. I think there was even an exercise to see how far you could put the candle away and still blow it out.

I believe that this is a symptom of an imbalance in the reed.
Do the "side to side" test to determine if one side of the reed plays harder than the other. Sand the tip and rail on the harder side.
Repeat and rinse. When you get the reed balanced, it will be easier to blow and the fuzziness will disappear, unless the whole reed is too hard in which case your sound will be a little fuzzy at any volume.
I use and like the ATG System from Tom Ridenour. It makes it easy to remove imbalances and to get reeds that play clear at any volume.
