I have been playing the clarinet in the school band for abt 3-4 yrs and have stopped last July. I have just started with private lessons and I am just wondering if the complete method of technical studies by Gustave Langenus in 3 parts is by any chance useful...I did not have much experience in such technical stuff coz they never emphasized this much in bands and basically most of the stuff I know was taught to me by my seniors and my instructor who's a saxophonist! ( sad to say, I am learning more in the 2 sessions I had with the private tutor than the few yrs in a school band)

Marius,
Talk to your instructor about your goals and what you expect to get out of lessons. Depending on your situation, a method of studies can be selected to best fit your needs. If the instructor wants to try you out on the Langenus - give it an honest try and let he/she know if you like it after a couple of lessons. I purchased the 3 part methods in a used book sale, but have not used them. It looks like a complete set of studies from beginner-intermediate-advanced. Your instructor should know about other studies that are widely available if the Langenus doesn't work out.

Somehow for some reason, my instuctor has not yet recommended me anything! ( I got no idea why) and he kind of mentioned that he doesn't really know what is really good for me so he's just giving me loose pieces to play which is quite ok...Maybe its because I have only had a few lessons with him, that's why. Thanks glin:)
