The first one -- Ulysse Delecluse on a 10" London LP, and, I think, originally on 78s. He was the head of the clarinet department at the French Conservatory and was an important teacher and player. He had a light, very bright, very "French" tone and an incredibly quick, smooth technique.
There are some very tricky spots in the Saint-Saens Sonata, and Delecluse is the only one who plays them with no hint of compromise. More important, his phrasing was perfect. He got everything right -- the dolce sections of the first movement, the witty badinage of the second, the contrasted heaviness and gossamer lightness of the third, and the fiery surge of the fourth.

Paul Meyer has a very smoothly executed record of this I own...
I also have a Karl Leister recording which is very nice, and quite expressive!

I strongly second Ken Shaw's nomination of Ulysse Delecluse. I think his accompanist was Jacques Delecluse, who, I assume, was his frere. jbjr

Where is this recording avalible. The only recording I have right now is with paul meyer and I really don't care for it. I would love to have a recording of Karl Leister playing it.

It is on a Eurodisc lp from the middle 70s/1976/

Paul Meyer has one of the fastest ones in "French Clarinet Art". His 4th movement is the best I've heard.
On the other hand, when mp3.com was still up, Avrahm Galper had a recording on it that seemed to be around half the tempo.
It's like they were playing completely different works.
