 Selmer No. 3 Crystal mtpc

A student of mine was given a "new" clarinet for Christmas. Her gift was a purple "Harmony" (manufacturer) clarinet which has a Selmer No. 3 Crystal mouthpiece with it. I've been trying to do some research on this particular mouthpiece and have only been able to come up with prices and a description of the mouthpiece.

Does anyone know what the particular measurements for the mouthpiece are? The Selmer site only lists it as "a medium facing."

What reed strengths would be suggested for this mouthpiece?

There hasn't been a whole lot of discussion regarding this mouthpiece and would welcome some opinions about it.

on a side note - I'm guessing that the mouthpiece (~$97 new) is worth a lot more than the clarinet!

I have a selmer 1 mouthpiece. To my knowledge these mouthpieces came in A1 or S1, A2 or S2, and A3 or S3 (much like how a pomarico has a bright and mellow per mouthpiece). I think this is because the mouthpieces are made by pomarico for selmer and those are the selmer equivalents to the "bright/mellow" designation (check to see if it has "Italy" engraved on it underneath the "selmer"). I have an S1 and found the A1 to be too stuffy for me. Also, I found that for some reason the rovner MKIII ligature I have works best on it. However I haven't had a chance to test my newest ligature, the Francois Louis on it.

Mine plays well. Not phenominal, but well. I just sent it away to David Spiegelthal to get refaced so we'll see what he can do. You're probably right about the mouthpiece.

Also (as you've probably noticed through your searching) the 3 is the most open tip facing they offer in the selmer. I'd probably suggest a 2.5 to 3 reed with it. That's based on the fact that I play a 3.5 - soft 4.0 on mine.

In my Frederic H Weiner catalog it shows the Selmer crystals come in three tip openings. Shows no info on facing length. I believe Pomarico makes the current Selmer crystals.

1 = .0045
2 = .0046
3 = .0047

The older Selmer crystals had facings like HS* and HS** and were scribed Clarion. These older Clarion mouthpieces I believe were made by O'Brien for Selmer.

The only crystals I know of marked A1, A2 and A3 were from Vandoren.

A1 = .0043
A2 = .0046
A3 = .0051

That's my $.02 worth.

JimV... One slight correction.

The Vandoren crystal tip openings were:

A1 (1.10mm) .043"
A2 (1.20mm) .047"
A3 (1.30mm) .051"

The A1, A2, and A3 facing numbers were used to corresponded with the millimeter openings 1.10, 1.20, 1.30 ...GBK

Hmm. Maybe. I just remember wondering whether to try a S1 or something else. Maybe it wasn't the A1, but I am pretty sure that there were two choices within the one facing.
