I recently got a shipment of clarinet mouthpieces from Ed Pillinger, the British mouthpiece craftsman. These mouthpieces are absolutely first rate, very nice material with a rich warm sound, good pitch, and wonderful response. I spoke with Mr. Pillinger on the telephone, he is a very nice fellow, very down to earth and good to deal with. I highly recommend trying them, he has a very wide variety of models, so I think players from both the US and UK will find something to their tastes. Ed makes his mouthpieces entirely from scratch, with great results.

I'd like to add to all this praise for Ed. I visited him in his workshop and he let me try out a range of mouthpieces - all excellent - until I found just the right one. I can blow the full range so easily with that mouthpiece and knowing this takes a lot of the tension out of my playing. He has also taught and played at a very high level and, in my case, he seemed to understand what type of mouthpiece I needed better than I did myself.

Which of his mouthpieces have people found to work well with the R13? Or at least, could you give any run down of various models?

You can go to his website for much information on his models. You can also direct your questions directly to him.
He shipped me quite a few samples and I picked two to keep that I use sometimes for my large bore clarinets - 1.) a large chamber, A-frame model based on 1930s style 1010 B&H mouthpieces and 2.) his model based on Pre-war 1010 B&H mouthpiece. Both play well with very different tonal characteristics.
