Hi all. I'm on the prowel for a new Bb and Eb mouthpiece. I've never been hapy with my Eb one, and as for my Bb (Viotto) my teacher back in Melbourne thinks that it isn't very well in tune with itself, and generally plays a bit sharp. I tried some M30's and M13 Lyres a while ago and thought they were ok. I'm waiting to try some more. Greg SMith has sent me some mouthpieces to try (both Bb and Eb)... I've chosen an Eb one I like, but I get this really tinny edge to my sound on all his Bb ones. The 1+ seems to work best for me out of all of them. They are good, until I get into the middle-upper clarion range and it gets very tinny. I don;'t know what else to try. Howcome they work for SO many people, but I find it so difficult to find something I'm suited to?

Oh and another thing which is very unusual - I also have a problem with being sharp on his mouthpieces (both Bb and Eb). I have to pull out quite a bit especially on Eb. Maybe it's my instruments?

Record yourself from the other side of the room - the 'tinniness' might be focus. I generally don't like the sound that I hear, but from the other side of the room it sounds good (well, according to everyone who listens).

Make sure you try mouthpieces with new reeds that have not settled in to your previous mouthpiece. Try different strength or style reeds. Also keep in mind that not all mouthpieces fit all people.

Welcome back Aussie Nick! I haven't seen you posting in a while! I've been doing lots of research on Greg Smith's mouthpieces and searched the Klarinet archives for some info on them. He stated a few times to remember that while many people like them, they AREN'T suited for everyone. And that your oral/nasal cavity does affect your playing a bit and perhaps that his mouthpiece just isn't right for yourself.
I also noticed a trend of people who liked and played on Gigliotti P facings tended to really like Greg Smiths, so if the Greg Smith didn't play for you, maybe you can try a Gigliotti P!
I've been a fan of the M15 mouthpiece. I loved the facing, articulation, and control, however I didn't have as much depth and tone color with it as I did with my Gigliotti (which I currently play). I've also ordered a few Greg Smiths myself and when I recieve them I will see what I think about them.
