 CD Player or portable player
Author: Carol Dutcher

I want to start playing one hour gigs here and there at convalescent homes, meetings, etc, as solo clarinet with a CD backup. What would be the best kind of CD player for me to buy. I need one that has "two channels". I would not be in large areas so don't believe I need something with large speakers. I just got through going what Circuit City has to offer and can't find anything like that. I'd appreciate any suggestions on this. Thanks so much.

Look at Sam Ash, Musician's Friend, or one of the other big discounters for commercial CD players (Sony, Tascam, HHB, Denon), and get a pair of powered mini monitors (KRK, M Audio, Event, Peavey, JBL, etc.) to go with it. You should be able to build the whole rig for $500 or $600 and sound a lot more professional than you would playing along with a boom box as if you were standing on the street playing for dimes.

Good luck in your search.

Hi, Carol: Exactly what do you mean, two channels? Stereo, or are you looking for a separate input (as for a mike)?

Regards,
John

One of my music books with CD, 24 Christmas Songs, from Hal Leonard has a note in the back. It says,

"A melody cue appears on the right channel only. If your CD player has a balance adjustment, you can adjust the volume of the melody by turning down the right channel."

My CD player does not have this, so with this particular CD it sounds like I'm playing right along with their solo player because I can't turn it down, the solo player that is.

My Jamey Aebersold CD's don't say anything like this so I don't have a problem with them and can use them just the way they are.

Thanks!

If you are looking for a simple cd player/radio with speakers, Walmart has an inexpensive on for $20. I forgot the name of it. It is not real large. I have one in my bathroom and got one for my mom for her kitchen counter.
