 What Country is your ISP?
Author: Bob A

Mark, et al,
Would it not be a good thing (obviously already considered and discarded) if one could know where the poster of the query is based? That way, some of the recommendations could be more directly tailored to the writer. No use telling someone in OZ or the UK about some fine deal available in Belly-Button Iowa, or some other out of the way place when shipping is unreliable, service poor and custom's taxes outrageous.

That is up to the poster. There's also the distinct possibility that the poster does not want their location known.

I just look at the provider information that is right next to the user name.

You will normally see a .au or .nz or .uk either at the end or somewhere in the provider info.

Mine doesn't say '.uk' at the end, but I'm in the UK - in London actually -and I don't mind anyone knowing that!

Mine is the USA and I live in Arkansas.

A little off topic, but......

Sometimes I wonder about the big thing about hiding your identity on the internet. What's the big deal? If I was going to worry about hiding who I was, I would worry about the some of the clerks at the stores where I have shopped. I write a check that has my name, address, telephone, and give it to a person that sometimes I have never seen in my life. Then I give them a drivers license to verify that it really is me. Or worse yet I give them a credit card. Most folks don't bat an eyelash about that, but are afraid to say what state or country they live in on the internet. Just don't understand that.

But then again, I don't try to be someone that I am not. So if someone wants to travel hundreds of miles to find me, come on down. I put on a pot of coffee. <g>

USA, Fair Oaks, (central) California, ten minute drive east of Sacramento. My ISP is a ten minute walk from my house. I'm listed in the local phone directory, the coffee's always on and you may help yourself to the cookies etc.

The big deal is that sadly there are some very sick people in this world. We (my wife and I) have a listed phone # and have both first names in the book. We do this for business reasons, and a hard to spell last name gives us some privacy, though not much. 20 years ago while she was home pregnant with our son, some sicko called her while I was at work and threatened to kill her husband James (that's how it is in the book) if she didn't **** him. The police were called, the line was trapped, but the guy never called back or visited.

One tip off to the source of my name was that I almost never use James, but rather Jim as posted here. Also at the time I was a sign tech and on the road, even my boss didn't know where I was without using my beeper, but my terrified wife didn't think about that.

We had one other incident about 10 years ago with a female caller in the middle of the night who used my name.

My ISP formerly gave a town 5 miles from here, now it gives one about 80 miles away, but that's still too close. My email address has my last name in it which is why I don't allow it to be seen here.

My annominity hides nothing but my last name, everything I've posted here in 5 and a half years is real.

I think I'll have to take the cake on this one, my posts entirely too much information about my location (yes, Wharton was a founder of Swarthmore as well as of the Penn business school and if you've ever been to Swat, especially near the tennis courts or the ampitheater you know exactly where I'm talking about). It's near Philly, to be more general.

Unless you happen to post from a company server (or via AOL but not always) in which case people will have no idea from whither you come - like mine. Excepting most people know where I'm from because I usually sign diz, sydney.
