mouthpiece

i know that the answer to "what kind of mouthpiece should i buy" is "whatever works best for you" -- but just needing some basic info here

i'm in my mid-40s and am taking up the clarinet again, mostly for my own amusement (after playing for three years in grade school)

i have a nice thirty-year-old grenadilla noblet 40 and am looking to upgrade my mouthpiece (probably to a vandoren)...wanting a balance between ease of play and tone...versatility is also important, though i play mostly stuff from the "great american songbook"

any suggestions on model? considering either the 5jb or the b45dot

what blows easiest? what makes good embouchere easiest to attain? what gives a big, round tone?

Those are both rather large tip openings, for a returning player.

If you do spring for the 5JB, get a Hite Premier or Fobes Nova for the first few weeks of warm up.

The 5JB favors a VERY light reed, on the order of 1.5, and may be difficult to keep on pitch. Kenny Davern plays one of these, but that guy could do pull ups with his lip!

For a while at least, I also suggest staying away from the "wide-open-tip" mps. Other Vandorens, the 5RV Lyre or the 11.6 are fine for me, having played all manner of cls and saxes for 70+ years. Get or find a music dealer's catalog, BW&WW, IMS [comprehensive!], Muncy, Weiner etc and look at the Bb mp comparison chart, then consider prices, there are lots to choose from! RR reeds are Ok, I presently like their LaVoz mediums. I also prefer Bonade or Luyben ligs. Welcome back to playing. Don
