 O'Brien Crystal with MO65
Author: JimV

This is my first post but I have been reading posts for the last two weeks. I have been playing clarinet for 40 years (mostly dixie and old standards). I know O'Brien crystals come in 1,1*,2,2*,OB*,3,3*,4,4*,5,5* but has anyone ever heard of an O'Brien MO65? I read hundreds of interesting posts here about the O'Brien mouthpieces and the other crystals. I can add a couple of points of interest (1) I was told by a reliable source the first ones were indeed made from coke bottles which accounts for the green color in the very early ones which many were very good mouthpieces as compared to later when the quality went down hill (2) Pete Fountain plays on a 4* with the tip opened a little. Anyway, has anyone ever heard of a O'Brien MO65?

Thanks Much
Jim

O'Brien mouthpieces had the date of manufacture etched on the table. The MO65 is probably indicating 1965 for year of manufacture and the MO could be something else that has been misread. The etching on the O'Brien was never very clearly marked.

No, my old O'Brien mailing tube just lists the 1-5 and OB facings. The only "modern" mp makers, that I have found, who use an M in their facing series are Pyne and Marcellus [Woodwind]. Of course, mo is used to mean medium open, a common designation. What 65 could mean is ?able, possibly an "English" system .65 " [2/3 inch] facing length?? Only a few makers list [make??] glass crystals. I favor Pomaricos, you might E-M Riccardo and ask, he is very helpful. If it plays "well", it is good [to paraphrase Ellington]. Luck, Don

In my IMS catalog [very comprehensive], the Bay mps use an MO _ designation, and others use an M [for medium?]. Douglas' suggestion is a real possibility. I have had several older O'B s refaced, some refacers might add their own designations! The MouthpieceWork@YahooGroups.com site has some posters who work on cl mps, most are concerned with the sax mps, tho. Don

Thanks for your input. I was trying to buy one on Ebay. I figured if I didn't like the facing I would send it to my facing guy and it would have been one of the early one's that Harry and Son made with maybe a good tone chamber and baffle. Got bid out at the last minute, it went for $45.00 bucks. (darn) I think your right about maybe Charlie Bay worked on/made a glass mp for someone in 1965 and put his MO facing on it. I know he has made glass mouthpieces (still does?) and maybe got the blanks from O'Brien. Anybody know where Zinner get thier glass blanks? From Pomirico?
